What WhatsApp Business actually costs in Tanzania.

Free is the first word everyone hears about WhatsApp, and the least true. Here is what a clinic or shop in Dar really pays to run it properly, including the parts nobody puts on the quote.

The app is free. The platform is not.

There are two different things sharing one green icon, and confusing them is where the trouble starts.

The WhatsApp Business app installs on a phone. It is free, and fine for a one person shop.

The catch: you answer every message yourself, at the counter, on the road, late on a Sunday. It does not book, does not remember, does not answer while you sleep.

The WhatsApp Business Platform is different: the official interface that lets a system answer, take a booking and write it into a diary. You reach for it once one pair of hands is not enough. Meta bills it.

What Meta actually charges for

Since 2025 Meta bills the platform per message, not a flat monthly fee, and the price changes with the kind of message.

A reminder is priced one way, a marketing blast another, a one time code another again. From late 2026 the replies inside a customer's own question, once free, start being billed too.

Two things matter. Meta sets the rate, not whoever sells you the system, and it changes by country, so a figure from a blog written for Nigeria or India is not yours.

Get the current Tanzania rate in writing before you sign, and be wary of anyone who says it is simply free. Free just dodges the question.

The honest way to carry this cost is to pass it straight through, at Meta's rate, on your own account, so nobody marks it up. That is how we do it. Worth asking of anyone else.

The costs nobody puts on the quote

Meta is only one line. A real setup has three more.

Why start free is the expensive option

The free tier tells the truth about the first month and nothing after, free only while the volume is tiny.

Then Meta's billed messages arrive on top, the staff time to babysit it on top of that, and the moment it answers a patient badly it costs you the patient, not a refund.

Cheap and off the shelf is a real cost you pay later. The question is never what it costs to switch on. It is what it costs to still be working, and still be right, in month six.

So what should it cost you

The answer depends on how many messages you get, in which languages, and whether you want them just answered or the booking and record behind them too. That is a short sum you can mostly do yourself before talking to anyone.

We publish our numbers in the open, an assistant on WhatsApp from a month of reception cover, instead of hiding them until we have seen your building.

Read the plans and what each one includes, see how the WhatsApp assistant works, or book the free audit, where we count what your customers actually ask and show the real figure. If it does not add up, the audit says so and you have spent nothing.

Straight answers

Is WhatsApp Business free in Tanzania?

The app on a phone is free, but you answer everything yourself. The platform that answers for you is billed by Meta per message, at a rate Meta sets, not the vendor.

How much does Meta charge per message here?

It depends on the type of message and it changes over time, and Meta sets it by country. Get the current Tanzania rate in writing before you commit, and be wary of a flat free.

What is the real running cost then?

Meta's messages, a payments cut if you take money in the chat, and the thing that answers: a salary, or a system that is hosted, watched and kept current. That last one is the cost the free tools leave off.

Get your real number, not a brochure figure

The free audit counts what your customers actually ask you and shows the working, in writing, with no obligation. Thirty minutes, and you keep the findings either way.
